Pens Up Guns Down actively serves the community almost year-round with growth opportunities for youth and parents. Here are a few of those ways:
Regular Events
Pens UP! Guns Down offers a mentoring & homework assistance program which is an activities-based development series during the academic school year for youth and a "Small Adjustments to Change" program for parents. The development series consist of two components.
Special Summer Events
In June 2023, Pens Up Guns Down conducted an experiential workshop with youth attending the Alabama State University Upward Bound Summer Program 2023 (see "Safe Neighborhood Workshop" tab for details).
In July 2019, Pens Up Guns Down conducted a 5-day camp entitled "Academics, Arts & Athletics." The youth were lodged at Alabama State University (ASU) for this camp. The facilitators for Pens Up Guns Down provided student-centered instruction in languages, STEM, dance, music and co-ed sports. The youth developed/enhanced their critical thinking, social engagement and teambuilding skills. The event culminated with a live performance where the youth showcased the learning outcomes.

During July 2018, Pens Up Guns Down conducted a 5-day program with regard to community services and civic duties. Youth from ages 8-18 engaged in learning activities which required use of critical thinking skills to navigate the curriculum-based practicums (see "Community/Civic Event" tab for details).
